Why Do Interviews Die: That Sinking Feeling and How to Prevent it!

By Jeff Altman Interviews die because a mistake occurred. Sometimes, you’ve made a mistake; sometimes they die because someone who screened a resume did. 1. Interviews often occur because someone has reviewed a resume and interprets something that you have written in ways that you didn’t intend. Someone believes that you have a skill that you didn’t list; sometimes, they misread something in your experience. Within 15 minutes, each of you knows that something is wrong but because interview etiquette doesn’t permit it, the conversation languishes on. 2. Sometimes it is your mistake. Sometimes you have overstated an experience or skill in your resume. In job markets like these, it is common for people to include every skill or experience they have been near or around in their resume in the hope that they will get an interview. As I screen resumes, it has become too common for me to find out about people having 4 months of experience with the core skill of the job I am trying to fill. That is rarely adequate for my client in the searches we are attempting to complete, yet, like mission inspectors in Iraq, I have to ask a follow-up question to deduce that the experience is inadequate. 3. The interviewer is off in another thought and you don’t bring them around to pay attention to you. Although an interview may be the most important thing in your day, it may be one of 25 priorities in the interviewers. What you may interpret as a dying interview may be the interviewer thinking about a project responsibility, the next question they’re going to ask, their commute, an argument with a spouse/significant other or child, an upcoming meeting or a million other possibilities. 4. You are boring the interviewer. Too often, answers to questions send the job-seeker off in lengthy answers that are just downright boring and long. It’s not the question; it’s that the person hasn’t organized their thoughts around a subject so the answer is becomes so lengthy, uninteresting and, often, have no relationship with the original question. How Can I Avoid This? There are different strategies depending upon the mistake. I’ll answer by offering ways to both avoid the mistake and to steer the interview along a better route. 1. When you are invited to interview with a firm, ask about the position that they want to interview you for. Try not to interview for jobs for which you are not qualified. They may saw a Director’s position or a programmer’s role. Ask then, if they can tell you more about the role and responsibilities of the position and what they are looking for in the way of a background or experience. If you detect a “red flag” or something that gives you reason to feel like there was mistake made, it is useful to say what your actual experience was in the area that and confirm that it is adequate. For example, a company looking for a Notes developer invites a Notes administrator with some development experience for a senior developer’s role. The administrator states that they are an administrator with two years of development experience during which time 40% of their work was development. Some of you may say that this will “kill the interview” and you’ll be right. Yet in this market, the interview would be a waste of time. 2. Don’t exaggerate your knowledge or experience on your resume. Be accurate when you present your experience or knowledge. If you worked with something for two months three years ago, indicate it on your resume. Don’t worry, you are not going to lose an opportunity to get hired because you were honest. You’re going to save yourself the agony of interviewing for a job that you wouldn’t get hired for anyway. 3. If you sense an interviewer is off in thought, there is a simple way to bring them back to you–shift your position by crossing your leg or adjusting in the chair or clear your throat and apologize for doing so. These two simple actions will bring their consciousness back to you. 4. Pay attention. Paying attention is not something you would think should be a necessary reminder. Too often, jobseekers are off in their thoughts and not paying attention. Not paying attention to what the company is looking for in the way of a solution to the job; thinking that they know better than the employer what they should be asking and then going off and answering that question instead of the one asked. Then the answer goes on forever! Try to answer the question in 30-45 seconds if possible. Some questions require more time than that; most don’t. By keeping your answers to that length, you will make the interview interactive. It is unlikely that you will bore your audience. You will create a back and forth with the interviewer that will keep them engaged in the discussion with you. You can probably even anticipate what their follow-up question can be and practice your answer in advance of the interview. You’ll probably notice that the first two suggestions occur before an interview, the next two occur during the interview. I don’t believe that smiling or asking a lot of questions are anything more than damage control. By following the points here, you will avoid going on interviews that you can’t win and do a better job in the ones you get. The Fortune is in the Follow-up in Marketing

By Kelly Smith One of the biggest mistakes marketers make is failure to follow up with potential prospects or customers. One reason could be that the importance of follow up is not usually taught in typical network training. They may tell their downline to follow up once and sit back and let the money come rolling in. If youre reading this, chances are the money isnt rolling into your bank account and you arent really sure why. Follow up is key in your business. Most home business owners today operate their businesses both offline and online. Did you know the average website only contacts its visitors one time? Statistics show if you only make one contact you will lose 54% of sales! Thats 54% too many. Remember what they say. The money is in the List. You want to nurture a list by developing a relationship with them. You can actually do this before ever contacting them. How would you like to have people actually calling you before you call them? All of this is tied to follow up. Its important to follow up with your list several times because: They could have accidentally deleted your offer Life got in the way and they completely forgot Skepticism. Its human nature to feel somewhat leery about giving your hard-earned money to a stranger! They dont have enough trust in you yet Its not the same as a physical store where the person can walk in and use the senses to physically, touch, smell and feel how the product works. When you are appealing to people through cyberspace you have to learn how to appeal to their senses in another way. Marketing is the art and science of empowering, communicating and developing a relationship with another human being based upon their needs and not yours. The reason follow up works so well is because it is creating the relationship. Follow Ups—- A Phone call Part of a follow up can be a call to introduce yourself. This is one way to define yourself among the other people who market online and never make that call. Follow up Emails using an Autoresponder We combine a phone call with some type of follow up system like an autoresponder or mailing system. Autoresponders are great for follow ups because they are automated and you are not making more daily work for yourself. You can send out info about your products such as testimonials for a health product, discounts and updates regarding your service. Another question is how many times do you need to follow up? Many experts believe 7 is the magic number, but lets say at least more than 6. A study done by the Association of Sales Executives revealed that 81% of all sales happens on or after the fifth contact. There are some free mailers out there but loading your arsenal with a good autoresponder can make it a bit easier. There are some fantastic autoresponders out there with various price points according to your budget. Obviously the more you pay, the more robust program you may receive, but most people are operating within a budget. Look for an autoresponder that at least allows you to personalize your emails with the persons name, has unlimited autoresponders, excellent email deliverability and easy to use. Dont forget, the follow up is just as important after the sale as before. This is also a major mistake business owners make. They dont follow up with customers after the purchase which could keep them coming back for more. Kelly and Brad Smith are the founders of BKS Marketing & Income Strategies. An ADD Case Study: What Does it Mean to “Fail”?

By Jennifer Koretsky Josh is a client of mine who is a junior in college. He’s very smart. He’s amazingly smart. Talk to Josh for an hour and you’ll know how smart he is. But if you don’t know Josh and you look at his grades from previous semesters, you would probably guess that he wasn’t smart at all. Josh gets frustrated in school. He works hard, but often finds that the pressure of test taking overwhelms him, and his grades suffer for it. Recently, Josh had a midterm in his Economics class. He knew it would be tough. He hates this class, but it’s required for his Business major. He had one test in the class already, which he did not pass. For the midterm, there were 3 books to review, and pages upon pages of notes to memorize. But he was determined to get an A. Three weeks prior to the test, he began setting aside review time. He highlighted the books, and took notes on them. He rewrote his notes to memorize them. And he even formed a study group with some of his classmates. The morning of the test, Josh felt good. He had plenty of rest the night before, he ate a good breakfast, and he was ready to ace his Economics test. He got to the classroom, ready to go, and when the test was handed out and he flipped through it, he froze. The test was four pages long, with short answer questions, math problems, and an essay. Even though he had studied so hard, Josh started to doubt himself. He did his best to push past the anxiety and overwhelm and finish the test. Then he went back to his dorm room and slept. He was physically and emotionally spent. A week went by before Josh got his test back. It was a B. He had studied so hard, he knew the material, and yet all he got was a B. He was crushed. “I did the best I could, I worked so hard to overcome this test-taking fear, and I failed.” “What exactly did you fail at?” I asked. “I got a B,” he replied. “I put so much work into that test that I should have got an A.” For Josh, it was very easy to look at the situation and see failure. He wanted an A. He wanted to prove to himself, his parents, and his professor that he could ace this test. And Josh was so busy holding himself up to unrealistic expectations, that he completely missed his successes: He stuck to the structure that we created for him. He developed excellent study habits to prepare for the test. He got a B! He answered approximately 80% of the questions correctly, when just a month ago he wasn’t passing the class. I pointed this out to Josh and, although he listened, he only half-heartedly agreed. Then, two days ago, I got this email from Josh: “Dear Jen, I got my philosophy test back today and guess what, I got an A-! I thought about what you said and realized that I have been doing really good studying this semester and I am doing better than I ever have. My dad is so excited about my B and A-. Thanks for pointing it out because sometimes its hard to see the good stuff.” I agree. Sometimes it is hard to see the good stuff - whether you’re a student, an artist, an office worker, a business owner, or a parent. When that happens, look harder. Even if you “fail,” you’ll still learn something about yourself or the situation you’re in. And if you’re learning, then you’re really not failing, are you…? This story was shared with Josh’s permission. About The Author Jennifer Koretsky is a Professional ADD Management Coach who helps adults manage their ADD and move forward in life. The Ten Things You Must Have In Your Tackle Box

By Trevor Kugler What are the ten things you have to have in your tackle box? To be truthful, it’s hard to narrow it down to ten. Have you seen the size of some of todays tackle boxes? My God, a person could keep enough stuff in some of the tackle boxes I’ve seen to survive on Mount Everest for three days! In any case, I’m going to go ahead and give you my top 10 must haves, that will at least get you started and have you pointing in the right direction. 1) A pair of needle nosed pliers. Have you ever tried to get a #18 Rapala out of a big walleyes mouth without a decent pair of pliers? There are treble hooks everywhere! And I wouldn’t suggest trying to remove them with your bare hands. Can you say “A trip to the emergency room?” 2) A can of bug spray. If you’re ever fishing in Northern Ontario on a hot day, at around dusk it’s either a can of bug spray or getting eaten alive. It’s your choice. I’ve experienced both and I have to tell you, go with the bug spray! 3) A couple of extra spools of fishing line. Whatever type of line you use, have extra spools in your tackle box. You just never know when you may need to re-spool you fishing reel. 4) A cell phone. Normally I would think of having a cellular telephone with you would be the definition of vanity. I mean, you’re supposed to be out fishing to escape all that a cellular telephone represents, right? But it is a wonderful thing to have with you in case of an emergency. 5) An assortment of lures. And back-ups of your favorites. There are few things worse than catching fish on a certain lure, and then getting snagged and losing that lure. Only to find out that the fish won’t bite on any other lure that you have with you. As perplexing as this seems, I’ve had it happen and it’s a very bad situation to get mixed up in. Have an extra or three of your favorite lures in your tackle box, ready to go. 6) An assortment of sinkers. You’ll want to have various sizes of the following: Egg sinkers, split shot sinkers, bullet weights, and a few barrel weights. 7) An assortment of hooks. You’re going to want four or five different sized hooks at least. You never know exactly what you’ll need or be fishing for, for that matter. There have been times when I went walleye fishing, and ended up fishing for Bass because the walleye just weren’t cooperating. Many times different species of fish require different size hooks. So have an assortment with you. 8) Jig heads and twister tails. This old standby is always good to have with you when you’re fishing. A package of both 1/4 and 3/8 ounce jig heads in the colors of your choice will work. And then a couple of packages of twister tails in matching colors will be a good bet. You never know when you may want a jig. 9) A lighter or matches in a baggie. If you ever got stuck somewhere, you’ll be very glad you have a way to start a fire. Just take my word for it. 10) Spare spools for your reels. This is where to keep those spare spools. If you’re extra motivated, have them filled with line so they’re completely ready to go. If a spool happens to break when you’re out fishing and you don’t have an extra spool with you, shame on you. You’re tackle box is where the extras should be. There is my top ten. Of course, there are many more things that will more than likely be in your tackle box, but these will at least get you started. Have fun and good fishing! The Teen Cellular Phone Market is Growing in Leaps and Bounds

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Catherine_Kenyeres]Catherine Kenyeres Everywhere you turn around, you see someone talking on a cell phone. This latest technological shift in the way we converse with each other has not been lost on teenagers. In fact, experts would agree, that teens are the fastest growing demographic in the cellular phone market. And the parents are paying for their teens to have a cell phone. Why? Having your teen carry a cell phone gives you, the parent, a secure feeling that your teen will be safe with one and the additional expense becomes a mute point. If you are debating whether or not you should get your teen a cell phone, compare plans and do your homework. All key cell phone companies offer family plans as well as free cellular phones. But before you make that purchase. While your main concern may be your teens safety but have you considered what your teens main objective may be? I doubt that it would be his/her safety. I bet your teens objective may be to talk to all of his/her friends on his/her new cool cell phone. Hence, the airtime usage will be astronomical. Therefore, you may wish to seek out a plan that has plenty of free minutes as well as unlimited nights and weekends. Or you may opt for a prepaid cellular plan whereby you will have more control over the minutes used. Secondly, can you depend on your teen not to lose her/his new cellular phone? If you think that this might be an issue, perhaps you should consider a free cell phone plan. While this may cost you money at the front-end, it wont be an extraordinary charge at the backend if your teen comes home without the cell phone. Another tipTeenagers driving and cell phone use. While it is against the law in some areas to drive while talking on a cell phone, you may wish to consider a hands-free kit for the car. This also allows your teen driver to converse on the cell phone and concentrate on driving. Cell phones are great devices and combined with the best cellular phone plan that suits you, your family and, of course, your budget, its a great investment. Why Hasnt Your Doctor Told You About Apple Cider Vinegar?

By Lee Dobbins Apple cider vinegar has been around for a long time yet many doctors do not prescribe it for ailments that it is perfectly capable of treating. This wonder food is said to help with weight loss, acne, acid reflux, cholesterol, constipation and heartburn among others. it is also said to work wonders for your overall health and can even help fight diseases such as osteoporosis, cancer, memory problems and aging. You might wonder, if apple cider vinegar is so great, why hasn’t your doctor told you about it? I think the simple reason might be that medical doctors are more apt to prescribe medicines than natural remedies. Pharmaceutical companies spend a lot of money getting their medicines and pills approved and they certainly wouldn’t want you using the inexpensive, unpatentable alternative of apple cider vinegar instead of buying their expensive cures and treatments. One big problem today that many people suffer from his acid reflux. Consequently, pharmaceutical companies have come up with a plethora of pills to treat this ailment. But before you take pills that may be harmful to you, you might want to consider treating your acid reflux or other stomach ailments with apple cider vinegar. You see, your stomach needs acid to digest food and when you have digestive problems like acid reflux or heartburn if not because you have too much acid it’s because there is too little. Most medications you would take for these aren antacids which diminish the amount of acid in your stomach but this may not be what you need. These antacids may treat the symptoms but they will not address the cause and therefore, will never cure your problem. Apple cider vinegar will mimic the acid level of your stomach and help you digest food properly which can help to treat that burning sensation. In addition, you might also consider taking digestive enzymes that will help your stomach digest the food. If you suffer from acid reflux, heartburn or nausea, try taking one tablespoon of Apple cider vinegar prior to each meal. You may see your symptoms go away in as little as three days. However, you’ll want to continue this practice for three to nine months and you may see the problem disappear altogether. You don’t want to use just any kind of Apple Cider vinegar, though. What you need is organic apple cider vinegar that still has the enzymes in it (called the “mother”). This is where the healing properties are. The “mother” will show up inside the bottle as stringy globs floating around. To get the most out of your apple cider vinegar, shake it up each time you take a swig so that a mother can be dispersed throughout. What’s that you say? It tastes terrible? Certainly most people do not take to the taste of Apple site of vinegar right away but it can be somewhat of an acquired taste and I know many people (including myself) that slug down a tablespoonful of the stuff all by itself. If you can’t stomach this, space however, there are some things you can do to make it a little bit more palatable. You might try making a tea from your Apple cider vinegar by heating a couple of water and then adding a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to that. You might also time to clean It with natural organic honey and some even say that this helps to boost the power. While it’s best to take apple cider vinegar before each meal, you can also take it anytime your stomach feels a little upset and it will have immediately curative effects. Some people swear by it and drink it for everything including the onset of cold and flu. An additional benefit is that many people who have taken apple cider vinegar before each meal have seen a moderate weight loss as well. You know what they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away - well in this case it’s a swig of apple cider vinegar today! Three Crucial Treatments For Depression

By Dragan Vekic There are three crucial treatments for depression. The two most important are psychotherapy and medication therapy. Psychotherapy aims to resolve any underlying psychic conflicts that may be causing the depressed state, while also giving emotional support to the patient. Antidepressant drugs, by contrast, directly affect the chemistry of the brain, and presumably achieve their therapeutic effects by correcting the chemical imbalance that is causing the depression. The tricyclic antidepressant drugs are thought to work by inhibiting the body’s physiological inactivation of the monoamine neurotransmitters. This results in the buildup or accumulation of these neurotransmitters in the brain and allows them to remain in contact with nerve cell receptors there longer, thus helping to elevate the patient’s mood. By contrast, the antidepressant drugs known as monoamine oxidase inhibitors interfere with the activity of monoamine oxidase, an enzyme that is known to be involved in the collapse of norepinephrine and serotonin. In cases of severe depression in which therapeutic results are needed quickly, electroconvulsive therapy has proven helpful. In this procedure, a convulsion is produced by passing an electric current through the person’s brain. In many cases of treatment, the best therapeutic results are obtained by using a combination of psychotherapy with medication therapy or with electroshock treatment. Cosmetic Bag Buying Do’s and Don’ts

By John Morris A make-up or cosmetic bag is essential for every woman who wants to look presentable all the time. If you shop at department stores or even online, theres a wide range of cosmetic bags available. The problem is you cant seem to pick one! Thats what this guide is all about - to give you tips and tricks on how to pick that make-up kit that is suited to your lifestyle. There are factors you should consider before jumping to buy a cosmetic bag. Your personal style, durability and of course, functionality all come into play. Read on to know more. DO 1. Keep with your own style Get a cosmetic bag similar in design to the purses or bags you currently use. A cosmetic bag is a woman’s ultimate accessory and needs to fit with your entire wardrobe, or a good majority of it, not just what you are wearing at the time when picking out your cosmetic bag at the store. 2. Size matters If you already have a purse, get a cosmetic bag that is small, portable and can practically fit anywhere. Professional make-up artists and extremely fashion-minded women may need to pick size over style. Put everything in your bag Choose what things are essential to you. You dont have to bring a hundred pounds of make-up when going to a party, to work, a girlfriends pajama party, or even traveling. Bring the basics - like a tube of lipstick, mirror, blush, a brush, foundation or powder, eye shadow, eye liner and mascara. Here’s a list of essentials every woman should have in their cosmetic bag. - A tube of lipstick It can serve as a blush on too that can make you look fabulous in seconds. If you still have space, throw in a lip gloss for that extra shine. - A mirror, preferably flat and compact for your cosmetic bag Double sided mirrors are available for $3.00 to $5.00. Its hard to apply make-up without seeing your face right? - A set of brushes These are always important for touch-ups. You can buy a complete kit filled with miniaturized brushes that costs anywhere from $5.00 to $10.00. Of course, it is mandatory that you bring eyeshadow palette that you use regularly - buy one with all the colors that you trust. Dont buy one that you havent even tested on your skin. Mascara and eyeliners are also indispensable for those occasional touch-ups. - Blush Bringing this along might be quite tricky because most of them come in big sizes. Choose one that is light, flat and compact. This is a basic element for that natural-looking healthy glow. Remember, your make-up kit is a miniature version of your make-up case. If your bottle of foundation is too big, transfer some to a smaller bottle that seals tightly. Choose compact style mirrors and flat brushes to save space. You can also bring a traveling toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant and facial tissues.
