You Are A Recent College Graduate, Have A Job And Now What?

By Pete Glocker Plan your financial future after college, through your twenties and beyond. A new car is the first purchase most college graduates want to make directly after graduation. You may ask yourself, what is the matter with being rewarded with something nice after completing such a hard task that you have been working towards your whole life? Depending on what your entry-level job pays; it would be wise to spend accordingly with your available income. Many graduates think they are getting better paying jobs than they actually get after college, so they purchase a vehicle way out of their price range. I know when I graduate in December, it will be nice to get a new car, but I know there will be student loans and other living expenses to pay off first, says Jayne Santucci, a senior at Florida Atlantic University. When recent college graduates get their first job, they see their co-workers with brand new cars, so they think they should get one also, not knowing the co-workers experience and salary, Santucci adds. If you are going into a career that coincides with your college major, you may want to consider starting with an entry level position rather than taking a higher paying job in an unrelated field. The entry level job will be better for you in the long run because it will give you more opportunities to advance in a field that you were trained in. If you start with a higher paid job in a different career, you might lose interest quickly and have little room for advancement. Stick with your career, and the money will eventually come. When you get hired for your first job in the real world, find out what kinds of retirement plans are available. The majority of employers offer 401(k) plans or other tax-deferred retirement options. With every paycheck you receive, you can contribute money into the 401(k) and many employers will match some part of your contribution. This will help you save for your future. Start your savings account immediately and if at all possible have your money directly deposited into your account. Learn to pay yourself first! According to CNN Money, college graduates of 2005 are being paid more in starting salaries than the class of 2003-2004. Here is a list of the average salaries for college graduates: Accounting - $41,039; Management - $35,811; Teaching - $29,733; Sales - $37,130; Nurse - $38,775; Financial /Treasury - $45,596; Software -Design - $53,729; Consulting - $49,781; Source: CNN Money 2005 After obtaining their landing your first job, many college graduates think it may be a good idea to move back home with their parents so they can save money. Saving money is not always the case when moving home. Having the feeling of fewer bills can provide you more freedom for going out and buying an expensive car, stereo or designer clothes. So, instead of saving your money, graduates could be spending it on items they do not really need. It might be a smarter idea to actually stay independent because you will grow and may learn faster what it means to be self-reliant. As a college graduate, you may struggle starting out at first, but it will be beneficial to you in the long run. The most important word to you, a recent college graduate, should be b-u-d-g-e-t. By creating a budget, it will give you the opportunity to design a method to pay your bills and save for something you really want. The better you are at sticking to a budget, the more peace of mind you will have when it comes to your personal finances. A persons twenties could be the most important years to start achieving your financial goals. The earlier you invest the better. If a 25-year-old who invests $2,000 a year at a 6 percent compound interest annually for fifteen years and never invests another dollar, after the age of 40, the 25-year-old will earn more by the age of 65 than a 35-year-old who invests $2,000 a year at 6 percent compound interest annually for 30 years, even though the 35-year-old would have invested twice as long. Last but not least, it is important to identify a short, medium and long-term goal for yourself. A short-term goal may be a new car, a vacation or a television. A medium-term goal could be buying a business, a house or paying for your childs education. A long-term goal can be retirement and traveling. Managing money as a young adult can be the most important in terms of your financial situation. It is best to do research and want to learn about how to manage your credit, bills, and any extra expenditure before it is too late. Be smart with your money. What Are Government Guaranteed Loans?

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kum_Martin]Kum Martin Government guaranteed loans are one of the most popular lending program types in the United States. This is simply because people or organizations who are otherwise not qualified to take on loans from banks and other lending institutions, can qualify for these programs as long as part of the group or sector is the intended beneficiary of the program. Government guaranteed means the government, through its designated government, secures the loans program. How does a government-guaranteed loan work? A government guaranteed bank usually facilitates loan and lending institutions designated by the government agencies. The idea is that people or organizations that are qualified for such a loan program, approach banks and lending institutions that are affiliated with the program and fill out the application form provided for them there. There are sets of standards and qualifications specified for particular government guaranteed loan programs, so it is imperative that for a person or organization to be able to get a guaranteed loan, they must meet all the requirements and qualifications. There are many government guaranteed loan programs being offered on the market nowadays. Some of the most popular government guaranteed loan programs are student loan programs, the small business guaranteed loan programs, the veterans guaranteed loan programs and the agricultural guaranteed loan programs. Accordingly, under these programs, the government pledges to purchase the unpaid loan from the bank or lending institution in the event where the borrower fails to pay the loan on the due date. These loan programs are intended for those people who do not have enough collateral available to qualify for secured loans. Craigslist Censoring begs the Question - Is the Internet the last great Bastion of Free Speech?

By Sullivan Rob Free speech is one of the building blocks of any democratic society. Without free speech we, as citizens of the democratic society, would be subject to many forms of chastisement including personal attacks and even legal ramifications. This is why I for one like the Internet. You see, to me the Internet is one of the last great representations of true free speech. We are allowed to post as we see fit whether it is a comment in a forum or a blog post which gets syndicated around the world. In fact, many sites have made their livings from allowing the general public to freely post their viewpoints, both positive and negative. Apartmentratings.com has been sued before by angry landlords or building owners. This is a site which allows renters of apartments all over the US to post comments and ratings about the buildings they live in. Of course, many people are generally happy with their apartments but some are not, and arent afraid to let the world know. It is these negative posts which have gotten the site in trouble in the past even though the websites terms and conditions clearly state that the opinions expressed are not necessarily those of the website owners. Now, Ive talked to the owner of this site before and I dont think he should be held responsible for posts made on his site. In fact, I dont think its his responsibility to have to censor those who post there either. I believe the only responsibility this site has to the apartment buildings in question would be to supply information of a technical nature to them if they have the legal documentation to support their request. In other words, his only responsibility should be to supply IP addresses of those who have posted the offending remarks, and then let the apartment owner try and track down the anonymous posters. It really has nothing to do with the site in question. The reason Im bringing this up is because another well known site is currently being sued for a similar situation. CraigsList.org is now the subject of a legal battle because of posts made to their website. Apparently, someone posted an ad for an apartment rental and explicitly asked that certain minorities not apply because, according to the person who posted the ad, these people tend to clash with me so that wont work out. Now, heres the issue for me: Sure the guys post stated that there were certain races that he did not want to apply, but its not like he said I hate you all! Instead, he said that these people tended to clash with him. This isnt necessarily a racist comment, hes just stating his opinion based on his previous experience. In my mind, that doesnt necessarily make him a racist. What really bugs me is that Craigslist is now being held accountable for this persons post. Sure it may not have been in the best of taste, but have you seen some of the other postings on Craigslist? There are many other posts which, while they arent similar to this one, are of equally poor taste in my opinion. Yet they are allowed to continue to be hosted on Craigslist. You see, to me there are so many issues at play in this one simple post. Just consider the racism issue for a second. Who determines that it is racist? And how does one know if a post is indeed racist? Lets look at the apartment ratings site for a second. If I was to post there about an apartment complex that housed primarily white people and that was ok by me, would I then be considered a racist? If so, why would you consider me a racist? Because I said that it was ok that mostly white people lived there? Does that make me a racist or the apartment owner/manager for renting mostly to white people? Perhaps it is a community that has a small ethnic population does that mean that the towns fathers are racist because they are not allowing different ethnicities to reside there? When does the racist card stop being played? Racism aside, why should Craigslist have to censor its postings? Is there some acceptability threshold? Some common denominator that says your post is OK but mine isnt? This then leads to the larger issue of who decides what is common decency? If the community as a whole should decide what is acceptable, why is it then up to the private business (in this case Craiglist) to enforce that common decency protocol? Because this is a privately run, for-profit business it should be up to them to decide how to run their business. I dont think Google actively filters racist sites from its search results, so why arent they being sued because that content is also freely and easily accessible through a Google search? In the end, I think if you are a believer in true freedom of speech with no strings attached, you must support sites like Craigslist and Apartmentratings. Because if you dont, you never know where the government or lawyers will stop. Before you know it our Internet could be as heavily censored as Chinas. And then where will democracy live? How To Get Off Of The Dating RollerCoaster

By Melanie Kira Clark Ever feel like you are on the dating roller coaster and cant get off? Youve tried every online dating site there is, friends set you up, and still you never seem to get passed the first or second date. You keep trying, but the emotional investment begins to wear on you after awhile. You start to think that online dating just does not work and surmise that there are just no compatible prospects out there. Yet you forge on and continue to ride the dating roller coaster with every last bit of hope you can muster. If you are continuing to get the same results when dating then you need to make some changes. The operative word here is you. First you must accept that you cannot change anyone but yourself. Dating is like sales. If your sales copy is not working then you need to change it. All of the magazines and talk shows suggest that you get a makeover - and that may be a good start. But if you are getting first and second dates only; odds are your appearance is not the problem. So where should you begin? The best possible scenario, would be if you could get those roller coaster dates to give you some honest feedback about why they chose not to pursue a relationship with you. You should be honest and ask the date to give you some feedback about the date before moving on. Asking for this kind of feedback will seem strange, but what do you have to lose? Let the date know you are trying to improve yourself. They may even ask you for your honest opinion about them. You have both established you are not a match, so you longer need to try and impress one another. Join forces and use your honest feedback to make your next encounter a better one. The fact that you are asking for honest feedback and willing to make the necessary changes to become more desirable, says a lot about you as a person. It could be just a simple adjustment that you are not aware of, like a hygiene issue. Although this may be embarrassing, it could change your results if only you knew. Or what if you are being overly aggressive or opinionated? By having your dates give you honest feedback - you can watch for trends and make the necessary adjustments easily, and painlessly. Remember you can only change yourself and by doing so - you can finally get off of the dating roller coaster. Melanie Kira Clark is co-creator of sendreportcards.com. Tips For Starting Conversation With A Stranger

By George Wood Starting conversation with someone you have just met is sometimes difficult for the majority of us just because we are not sure of what to say. But to be confident to make the first move in starting conversation with a stranger often boosts our spirits and helps us to become more diligent and contented with ourselves. First of all be confident about what youre going to say is not going to put the other person in a difficult situation. Make a few easy remarks about the way they look or how beautiful the weather is. Always try to start a conversation with a positive note. Before saying anything, smiling at the other person also helps to ease down the tension between the two of you. Help them out with something theyre doing and make casual small talk while doing so. Ask them what theyre doing it for and how will they like it done. Try to sound friendly but do not pry too much into someones privacy. Remember that its your first meeting and everything has to flow in a natural manner. To make small talk with anyone, you have to see what age group they belong to. You cant talk about politics or current affairs with someone who is young and enthusiastic. And you cant talk about movies, dating or relationships with someone elderly. Also try to judge their personality by looking at the way they have dressed up to decide the topic of discussion that will be best suited between the two of you. If you have a strong hold of general knowledge you should not have any difficulty talking to just about anyone in the crowd. If you want to learn something new, making small talk with someone nearby will help you out a lot. Ask them questions to extract information that will be useful to you in future. Listening is very important in any conversation. Whether you are talking to a complete stranger or someone you know, you have to listen to what they have to say before putting in your own remarks. If you dont listen and keep babbling, chances are the other person will soon get bored and walk away. Be an active listener and avoid such situations. But that doesnt mean that you should only keep on listening and do not make deliberate efforts of contributing in the conversation. Make it interesting and useful for both parties and make sure the two of you depart on a positive note. Making small talk with someone is a great way to increase your social circle and improve your vocabulary as well as information. Dont be hesitant and keep in mind that all of us are in need of human attention and care. Its only going to make someone cheerful or bring a smile on their face. So dont miss out on any such opportunity and make the first move in starting conversation with anyone. Choosing Fish for the Garden Pond

By Philip Swindells Once a new garden pond has been planted and the waterlilies and other aquatic plants have been established for four or five weeks, ornamental fish can be introduced. There is no minimum number of fish necessary for a pond, although without any fish at all it will become a nursery for mosquitoes and there will be little chance of controlling aquatic insect pests. Even for the pond-keeper with little interest in ornamental fish, it is prudent to introduce half a dozen merely to control insect life. The majority of pond-keepers find fish as important as plants, especially those who have a young family. Children love fish, although there is a danger of over-stocking, for there never seems to be enough in any pond for young children. There is also impatience to get the new pond stocked immediately it is filled with water. This must be resisted until the plants have had an opportunity to establish. While there is no minimum requirement for fish, there is a maximum number that should not be exceeded. The most satisfactory stocking rate is 2ins length of fish to every 1 square foot of surface area. This is not of the total surface area of the pond but of open water uncluttered by marginal plants. This rate of stocking permits growth and development of the fish and makes natural breeding likely. Fish enthusiasts will often stock more heavily than this, but an absolute maximum is 6ins to every 1 square foot of surface area. When purchasing fish a good guide as to whether they are healthy is the condition of their fins. Stout upright dorsal fins and well-expanded ventral fins are an indication of good health and this can be confirmed if the eyes are clear and bright as well. An obvious consideration when selecting fish is their liveliness. However, while a lively fish is likely to be a healthy fish, it could equally be a very hungry fish. It is common practice with many fish retailers to keep the fish a little hungry. This ensures that they swim and dart about the tank in search of morsels of food and therefore appear livelier than they would ordinarily. An added bonus is the reduction in the fouling in the tank. With small fish it is important to see that there are no damaged or missing scales as exposed tissue is very susceptible to fungal infection. The same applies to larger specimens, although it is not so critical, and the likelihood of finding a large fish that has no scales missing is fairly remote. If an otherwise healthy fish has a few scales missing, then dip it in a proprietary fungus cure. It is prudent in any event to treat all newly purchased fish in this way as a precaution before introducing them to the pond. Philip Swindells has over 40 years gardening experience. A former botanical garden curator and an international horticultural consultant, he has worked extensively in the UK, North America, the Middle East and Australia. Relationship Help: Do You Know What Kind of Eggs Your Partner Loves?

By Denice Moffat My husband and I just re-watched the Julia Roberts movie, Runaway Bride. Remember when Richard Gere said to Julia, You dont even know what kind of eggs you like. Apparently neither did any of the men she had left at the alter. Communication is essential for a long-lasting, happy relationship. Its easy the first six months when those hormones run wild, but after that, you have to actually do some WORK to keep the relationship going. Runaway Bride reminded me of how lucky I am to have the most awesome and loving husband in the world, but, Ive noticed in my practice as a naturopath and medical intuitive, that most people are not as lucky in the relationship area as I amand their body shows it with the byproducts of emotional distraught through rheumatoid arthritis, allergies, cancer and lots of other manifestations. So, how do you build a great relationship? I have worked on that over the years (this is my fourth and last marriage.) This is an exercise I share with many of my clients that has saved some marriages, nurtured others, and has benefited all who have completed it. My theory about relationships is that there are certain patterns we cannot change. To get along and flourish, we need to understand that: 1) Men and women are just different. 2) We each have some male and some female tendencies. 3) We are here to work through lessons, so sometimes it just helps to know what your soul contract is with your partner. I like muscle-testing as a technique to determine how many lifetimes you have spent with each other and what those lessons are that you came here to focus on. It helps to put things into perspective (or not for those of you who dont believe in reincarnation!) 4) Relationships are where its at, no matter how busy we keep ourselves with our To Do Lists and jobs. 5) If you dont learn it in this relationship, the lessons will be repeated until you get it through other relationships (take it from one who knows!) We are all angels in each others lives, to share certain lessons or be here to support each other. 6) And, finallyLove is all that really matters. The Relationship Exercise: Find out what really pleases your mate and commit to do at least three of these things on their list of 10-15 items each and every day to build up that emotional bank account. Why? Because someday you will inadvertently make a withdrawal on that emotional bank account and you dont want to be overdrawn! Emotional overdraws lead to divorce. I guide my clients to download my relationships exercise http://www.naturalhealthtechniques.com/Coaching%20Corner/relationships1.htm and make one copy for each person in the family unit. The exercise includes one of my famous no brainer lists, which is a list long enough that you dont have to think things up on your ownthe perfect memory-trigger. Post your completed lists on the refrigerator. It helps to keep you focused. Review the lists with each other once a day. Its not what makes US happy we should be doing for our partners and family members, its what makes THEM happy. And dont be pushing buttons when you know what severely displeases your partner. That is not playing fair. You will pay for it later because you reap what you sow. 2005 by Dr. Denice M. How Processing Affects Apricots

By Cindy Ng Ninety-eight percent of all juices, including apricot juices, sold in the United States are pasteurized to stop the natural enzyme action that would otherwise turn sugars to alcohols. Pasteurization also protects juices from potentially harmful bacterial and mold contamination. Following several deaths attributed to unpasteurized apple juices that contain E.coli, the FDA ruled that all fruit and vegetable juices must carry a warning label telling you whether the juice has been pasteurized. By the end of the year 2000, all juices must be processed to remove or inactivate harmful bacteria. Five pounds of fresh apricots produce only a pound of dried apricots. Drying remove the water, not nutrients. Ounce for ounce, dried apricots have twelve times the iron, seven times the fiber, and five times the vitamin A of the fresh fruit. Three and a half ounces of dried apricots provide 12,700 IU of vitamin A, two and a half times the full daily requirements for a healthy adult man, and 6.3 mg of iron, one-third the daily requirement for an adult woman. In some studies with laboratory animals, dried apricots have been as effective as liver, kidneys, and eggs in treating iron-deficiency anemia. To keep them from turning brown as they dry, apricots may be treated with sulfur dioxide. This chemical may cause serious allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, in people who are sensitive to sulfites. Apricots can also be found in medical uses. They are used in lowering the risk of some cancers. According to the American Cancer Society, apricots and other foods rich in beta-carotene may lower the risk of cancers of the larynx, esophagus, and lungs. Although this remains unproven, the ACS recommends adding apricots to your diet. There is no such benefit from beta-carotene supplements. On the contrary, one controversial study actually showed a higher rate of lung cancer among smokers taking the supplement. Quick Weight Loss: Fact Or Fiction

By Carl DiNello Why are people always looking for a quick fix? Some want to get rich quick, but generally the only people making those promises to us are only trying to get their hands in our pockets. Some want to grow tall quick. Some want their hair, or their nails to grow quick. Some even want to sleep quickly, and still be able to function normally. Seemingly, always in a hurry, we want quick results in every aspect of life that matters to us, including weight loss. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a safe, quick weight loss program. While we always see the promises of fad diets, and obscure exercise products, as offering a quick weight loss solution, the truth is, and there’s no way around it: you have to do the work. The math is quite simple; burn more calories than you eat. We may not like it, but diet, and exercise, are still the answer. What’s Wrong With Diets That Promise Quick Weight Loss? * Most fad diets emphasize one food type, almost to the exclusion of everything else. All your life your parents, and doctors have pointed out the benefits of following a balanced diet, and they were right. Only a balanced diet will provide you with all the valuable nutrients you need. Anything less could put you at risk for serious nutritional deficiencies. * Most fad diets become very boring, making them almost impossible to stay on for any length of time. A fad diet might offer you some quick weight loss at the start, this will level off in a short time, and the lost pounds will return when you come off the diet. * Most fad diets don’t acknowledge, and encourage the role of physical activity in weight loss. Those that do, do so in very fine print. A safe, sensible, and effective weight loss program balances both diet and exercise. Diet alone will not allow you to maintain any significant weight loss over time. * Many fad diets have nothing substantial to back up their claims. There examples of successful people using their diet are the exception, rather than the rule. According to the American Heart Association, many of the claims made by these fad diets, are unsubstantiated myths. What Do We Really Have To Do To Lose Weight? * Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits, and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are rich in the vitamins and minerals your body needs to function properly. Fruits and vegetables also help to give you that full feeling. * Eat whole grains, and fat-free, or low-fat dairy products. Whole grains are the good carbohydrates. They are high in fiber, which helps to promote fat loss. Fat-free, and low-fat dairy products provide the protein, and calcium, you need without overloading you with fat. * Take part in regular physical activity. Regular exercise will not only help you burn fat, but will also strengthen your muscles, improve your digestion and elimination, and greatly reduce your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and other conditions. * Get enough rest. Try for at least 8 hours of sleep every night. Studies have shown that people who get too little sleep are more likely to indulge in unhealthy behaviors such as overeating, and avoiding exercise. * Try to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water each day. Drinking plenty of water helps you to feel full, and promotes elimination of waste materials from your body. There is an old saying that states: if it’s important enough, you should be willing to work hard for it. Quick weight loss, that is permanent weight loss, is unrealistic, and in many cases unhealthy.
